Literacy Support

Read Write Inc.

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a comprehensive literacy programme that teaches children reading, spelling, and handwriting.

Children in Reception to Year 2 have daily Read Write Inc lessons focussing on helping children to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling.

Children are in groups appropriate to their phonic level and are re-assessed and re-grouped each half-term. Each lesson includes phonics, reading, spelling, and handwriting.

Reading Support

The Power of Reading

At school, children are listened to daily, but regular reading at home is essential for them to make progress, change their reading book, or move up a level. We kindly ask that you make reading a part of your child's daily routine. Reading for pleasure, together!

10 things to think about when you read to your child - Video

Questions to ask your child when reading:

Asking questions is an important part of your child's reading journey. Here are a variety of questions which could be asked at different points of the book.

Before reading:

  • What do you think will happen in this story? Why do you think that?

During Reading:

  • Can you tell me what has happened so far?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • What type of character is…, are they kind, rude, happy, miserable, how do we know this?
  • Can you find a question mark on this page? Why have they used it here?
  • What do you think will happen next?

After Reading:

  • What was the most exciting part of the book, what made it exciting?
  • What sort of character was…?
  • Why did the character do… (choose a part from the book)?
